When was the last time you checked the categories and services on your Google Business Profile?
If you haven’t looked at them since setting up your profile, it may be time for a review. Your clinic might have added providers, introduced treatments, or shifted its focus. Your profile should reflect the practice patients can visit today.
In this episode of The Clinic Marketing Podcast, we explore how to evaluate your categories and services, spot outdated information, and make your profile easier for prospective patients to understand.

What’s the Difference Between Categories and Services?
Your categories describe the type of business you operate. Your services explain the specific care available.
For a chiropractic practice, “Chiropractor” may describe the business. The services section can provide more detail about the treatments and appointments offered.
These settings work together, but they serve different purposes:
- Categories identify your business using Google’s available options. You cannot create a custom category.
- Services describe individual offerings. Profiles with a services editor may include suggested services and the option to add custom services.
Every treatment does not need its own category. If you cannot find an exact treatment name in the category list, it may belong in your services section instead.
Start With Your Primary Category
Open your Google Business Profile and check your primary category. Write it down or take a screenshot, along with any additional categories.
Then ask:
Does this describe the core business we operate today?
A category can be related to your work without being the clearest choice. For example, a chiropractic practice using “Medical clinic” should evaluate whether “Chiropractor” more accurately describes its business.
For a multidisciplinary clinic, discuss the choice with your team. Consider the providers, care, and business structure currently in place. A service you plan to introduce next year should not guide today’s category selection.
Review Your Additional Categories
Adding more categories is not automatically better. Each selection should accurately describe your business and support reasonable patient expectations.
Ask yourself:
If someone found us through this category, would they find the kind of practice and care they expected?
Working with athletes does not automatically make every sports medicine category appropriate. Including soft tissue work in an appointment does not necessarily mean “Massage therapist” describes your business.
Look for missing categories, too. If your clinic has added another discipline or substantially expanded its care, your existing selections may need another look.
Use the Category Finder for Clinics to explore possibilities. Start with a specialty shortcut or search term, then compare the results with your actual practice. Confirm that your chosen category is available inside Google before making an update.
Category Questions for Different Clinic Types
The right choice depends on what the profile represents and the care available. These examples offer starting points for your review.
Chiropractic practices
Evaluate “Chiropractor” when chiropractic care is your core business. Consider additional categories only when they describe established parts of the practice, such as massage therapy provided by qualified massage therapists.
Physical therapy and acupuncture practices
Compare clinic and practitioner categories carefully. Options such as “Physical therapy clinic” and “Physical therapist,” or “Acupuncture clinic” and “Acupuncturist,” should be evaluated against the business or individual represented by the profile.
Medical spas and dermatology practices
Check whether a broad spa category accurately describes your medical aesthetic business. Specialty categories should reflect the actual professionals and care available. Providing skin treatments alone does not make “Dermatologist” an appropriate selection.
Dental and eye care practices
Review specialty categories against your providers and services. Treating children does not automatically make a dental practice a pediatric specialty practice. Similarly, “Optometrist” and “Ophthalmologist” describe different professional roles.
Veterinary practices
Evaluate categories against the operation and patient expectations. Be especially careful with emergency care categories. Your availability and services should support what a worried pet owner would reasonably expect.
Check Whether Your Services Are Still Accurate
Once you have reviewed your categories, open the services section. Read every entry, including any suggestions Google provides.
Add services available today
Has your clinic introduced a treatment, added a provider, or established a new program?
Check whether those offerings appear accurately. Where supported, a custom service can help describe care that does not appear among the suggested options.
For practices with multiple locations, review each office separately. A treatment available at one location may not be offered at another.
Remove outdated offerings
If a provider left, a program ended, or a treatment was discontinued, update the relevant entries.
Your front desk can help identify problems. Ask whether people are calling about services you no longer provide. Those conversations may reveal outdated information on your profile or website.
Use clear service names and descriptions
Help prospective patients understand what you offer. Where descriptions are available, explain the service in plain language and keep the information factual.
Avoid promises of results or lists of repeated search phrases.
Also, distinguish services from conditions. “Back pain” describes a concern. An evaluation or treatment service explains what your clinic provides. Your website can discuss conditions and care in greater depth.
Compare Your Profile With Your Website
Open your website beside your Google Business Profile and review your key services.
Can a prospective patient find out:
- What the service involves?
- Who provides it?
- Which location offers it?
- How to ask a question or book an appointment?
Every small offering does not need a separate webpage. However, important services need enough explanation to help someone understand their options.
If your profile lists a treatment that your website barely mentions, consider whether the website needs an update.
Coordinate Changes With Your Team
Before editing, check with anyone else who manages the profile. Coordinate with your office manager, providers, and marketing team so everyone is working from the same information.
Capture your current settings and record what you change. Category edits can sometimes prompt Google to request verification again, so make sure the appropriate account access and business information are available.
Avoid repeatedly switching categories based on a quiet week or a single search result. Changes in visibility or inquiries can have several explanations. Make deliberate updates based on accuracy.
If your existing categories fit the practice well, keep them.
