Podcast Transcript  - Online Searching is Changing: The Impact of AI on Google & Bing

Hey guys, Darcy Sullivan here. Today we are talking all about some changes that have come to search engines and what it means for the future of search on Google and some of the other more popular search engines.

Today, we're gonna be talking about generative AI. And before you say, “Oh, my goodness, that's too techie, what are you talking about?” Please stick with me, because the whole goal of today is to get you familiar with some of the changes that are coming to search in a very non-technical, easy-to-handle way.

Now, before we dive into this episode, I want to invite you to a live webinar that I am hosting on June 17th of, 2024. It's all about how you can use ChatGPT and AI marketing strategies and tools to enhance and simplify your SEO and content marketing efforts.

If you're interested in signing up for that, please visit propelyourcompany.com/AI-training. We'll look at how AI is driving changes to Google's ranking algorithm and how you can implement simple AI strategies by using tools like ChatGPT and others to improve your online presence.

And even if you can't make it, please be sure to sign up because as long as you sign up ahead of time, you will get access to the recorded version of the training.

So today, in this episode, we want to focus on the shifts that we're seeing in AI and how AI is being used on platforms like Google to change the way people are currently searching and what this might mean for future searches.

Now, we're going to kind of focus more strongly on Google in this conversation, but also note that the same thing, or a variation of it, is happening on Bing with Bing's new Copilot feature. So if you haven't had a chance to check that out and, in fact, if you're just one of those people that is like, “I Google things, I don't go to any other platform to search”, I encourage you to take time every once in a while to check out what search looks like on platforms outside of Google.

Also, it's always great to do a search for your business on various outlets like Google–like Bing– to look and see how your brand is showing. It’s always important to keep tapping into knowing what your brand looks like on various platforms.

So, as I mentioned, we're seeing these search shifts and more; it's an adaptation. Google is looking at AI, and it is now saying,  “How do we use this to improve our searches?”

What used to be called GSE, which was short for Google Search Generative Experience, is now called Google AI Overviews. And again, if you haven't had a chance to check this out, I strongly suggest that you do. Google AI Overviews and Bing Copilot offer a new way for you to interact with search results, and it gives the user an experience, via generative AI, to communicate with the interface and take over search, giving it quicker, more precise, and more conversational responses.

So what does this mean for you? Well, does it mean SEO is dead? Absolutely not. What it does mean is that it's time to start playing around with these new advancements and getting an idea of how they work and how they display information.

It means it's time to invest a little bit in AI, which is one of the reasons that we are hosting that live webinar to talk about the what's working now, real tools, and strategies, and it also gives you the opportunity to get an idea, or a better idea, of where we're headed when it comes to search.

And, I think if you were to take a step back and you were to look at search, maybe seven plus years ago it used to be if someone were going to go to Google something, for instance, they wanted to know who the CEO of Facebook was, they would type in “Facebook CEO.” But now, as the search has evolved over the past years, with voice search, with AI, with all of these things, even with the phones that we're using, where it's easier to type out longer search terms, somebody would not say “CEO, Facebook.” They would probably say,  “Who is this CEO of Facebook?”

So we're starting to see that things are going to continue to evolve in a way that's more conversational, and if you've been listening for a while, I know the podcast doesn't have that many listeners, but if you have been on our email list for a while, you know we've been talking about voice search, we've been talking about AI for seven plus years. So this is nothing new. It's just, again, the evolution of search.

So what does that mean for you? Well, most people listening are clinic owners or they work for clinics. They have small businesses, and what this means is that Google is able to generate information by looking at all the data points that it already has online, right?

So if you are a local business, you want to make sure that you're enhancing your local SEO efforts, that you are, beyond a doubt, sure that all of your listings are accurate, that all of the information about when you're open is accurate, that you have plenty of quality content, that you are providing your users first and Google second, so that you have comprehensive content that not only answers specific queries but also helps to engage users and provide value that maybe your competition isn't really offering yet.

And again, while this is exciting, while this is new, while things are still evolving, you really do want to make sure that you are following the traditional best SEO practices and then taking into account the words, the phrases that your target audience is using, because, with these generative results, Google can more accurately determine so much stuff, right?

It can determine a person's location more accurately than it could years prior. It can determine where your business is, what's near it, or it can determine the best results to show somebody based on their specific location and based on your business's specific location and your specific offering if you truly have detailed your offering in your Google Business Profile listing and on your websites.

We want to make sure that we're giving Google all the signals it needs to suggest you when somebody types in “best chiropractor in my city” or “chiropractor near me.”

We want to make sure that Google can provide more precise and relevant results, which is what Google wants to do, and with this evolution of AI, Google is also able to understand context better.

So, it's not just about where the user's location is and where your location is, but it's also about their para-searches and the information that they've been looking for.

So if you are a small business, I strongly recommend that you join that training that we have coming up. It is going to be on June 17th, and we are going to dive into how AI is changing Google's ranking algorithm in way more detail than we could in this short episode, along with how to use AI tools like ChatGPT to improve your online presence.

I really do hope to see you there Again. You can sign up by visiting propelyourcompany.com/AI-training, or be sure to take a look at the Show Notes for more details.

The Show Notes will also include links to our website page, where we go into more detail about generative AI. We also give some video references that show you exactly how some of this stuff works in action. I hope to see you at that live training.
